A novel surgical palpation probe installing a miniature 6-axis force/torque (F/T) sensor is presented for robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery. The 6-axis F/T sensor is developed by using the capacitive transduction principle and a novel capacitance sensing method. The sensor consists of only three parts, namely a sensing printed circuit board, a deformable part, and a base part.

· Specifically, this thesis presents a novel, low-cost design for a palpation probe and a Bayesian algorithm using Gaussian Process Adaptive Sampling for tumor localization. First, we describe the design and evaluation of the single-use palpation probe, which we call PALP, to localize subcutaneous blood vessels.
This paper presents a novel fiber optic tactile probe designed for tissue palpation during minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The probe consists of 3×4 tactile sensing elements at 2.6mm spacing with a dimension of 12×18×8 mm3 allowing its application
The use of the palpation probe as a tool mounted on the dVRK to perform automated sliding palpation in the silicone-based tissue phan-toms is also demonstrated. Initial results suggest a potential for the clinical utility of automated sliding palpation in both supervised and semi-supervised telesurgery.

Deep palpation of the abdomen is performed by placing the flat of the hand on the abdominal wall and applying firm, steady pressure. It may be helpful to use two-handed palpation (Figure 93.2), particularly in evaluating a mass. Here the upper hand is used to exert pressure, while the lower hand is used to feel.
· Canalicular “palpation” using a 0 or 00 Bowman probe (Storz E4200–E4205 for a complete set) to test patency of the canaliculus. ( B ) Lacrimal irrigation, using a lacrimal cannula (Storz E4406 or E4404) to test patency of the nasolacrimal duct.
· Accurately detecting tumors and estimating the depth of tumors is essential in the surgical removal of tumors. In robotic-assisted surgery, autonomous robotic palpation has the potential to provide more precise detection, tumors' depth estimation, and less intrusion when normal tissues surround tumors. In this article, by mimicking the human finger touch, we propose a tactile sensing …
training. Subjects were instructed to use whatever palpation methods they desired to accomplish the task. Each participant was timed in each trial and palpation forces were recorded using the force plate. Each subject was randomly presented with 30% of the samples, as going through the entire set …
tele-operation. In traditional surgery, surgeons can palpate tissue in order to localize sub-cutaneous inclusions. In prior work we developed a low-cost, single use, disposable haptic probe which mounts onto the tip of a standard da Vinci needle driver that allows

· Background Although obese patients benefit from neuraxial anesthesia, technical difficulties often discourage its use. The current randomized trial compared Accuro, a hand-held, battery-operated ultrasound (US) device, and conventional palpation for spinal anesthesia in obese patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. We hypothesized that Accuro would decrease the number of …

Locate the pulses by palpation or with the Doppler probe. Apply transmission gel to the pulse site. Place the tip of the Doppler probe at a 45° angle pointed towards the patient's knee until an audible pulse signal is obtained. Inflate the pressure cuff 20-30 mmHg above the point where the pulse is …

· Intraoperative use of DRS is feasible, because measurements do not delay the surgery and the results can be made available in real time. With the reported sensitivity and specificity in this ex-vivo study, it would be interesting to further develop the technology into a surgical instrument, which can be sterilized for in-vivo use.
· In this paper, we present a new robotic probe based on a variable lever mechanism (VLM) able to achieve stiffness ranging from 0.64 N.m/rad to …
In group LM, the femoral vein was cannulated using the traditional method of palpation of arterial pulse. In group US, cannulation was guided by real-time scanning with an ultrasound probe. The time to complete cannulation (primary outcome), success rate, number of needle passes, number of successful cannulations on first needle pass, and .
